VIDEO: Local filmmakers walk 500 miles to Coast debut
COAST filmmakers Terence Young and Ashlee Jensen are one step closer to making their film careers a reality.
Young, of Sippy Downs, and Jensen, of Woombye,
recently screened their independent film 500 Miles at the Palm Beach International Film Festival in the United States after the drama's world premiere in Brisbane earlier this year.
The film stars Ebony Nave as troubled Brisbane teen Emily and Pete Valley as Shane, who helps Emily after her car breaks down.
"It was interesting, not knowing how an American audience would take it," Young said.
"The biggest feedback has been that the two leads, who are complete unknowns, just smashed it and that's credit to Ashlee because she came in directing for the first time having just acted.
"One of the biggest negatives you (typically) get from independent films is that the acting is sub-par."
The young filmmakers also signed with a North American distributor earlier this month, which will see the film marketed via digital, video-on-demand outlets like iTunes, Amazon and Hulu in the US in the coming months.
"Distribution changes the way you're perceived in the industry," Young said.
But Young and Jensen are keen for the film to screen on the Coast, where much of it was filmed.
Tickets are on sale for a screening at Birch, Carroll and Coyle Maroochydore at Sunshine Plaza on August 27 at 7pm.
The screening will double as a fundraiser for Sustainable Partnerships Australia's Young Women's Initiative, which will receive 60% of the proceeds.
Young, Jensen, Nave and Coast-based make-up artist Natalie Stanfield will attend.
"It's a great way to give back to a local charity," Young said.
He said the pair would use 500 Miles as a springboard for their next project, an untitled action thriller they plan to film in the US and the Middle East.
"I've got three investors lined up that would probably look at getting us close to that $1 million budget we want for a film," he said.
