Local cricket men win contracts

LOCAL cricket products Tom Cooper and Brendan Drew have continued their rise to prominence with first-round contract offers from their respective States.

Cooper is now fully contracted to represent South Australia and Drew is contracted to Tasmania for the 2010-11 season.

Cooper, 23, played his junior cricket in Lismore and represented Workers then Eastern Districts in the FNC LJ Hooker League.

His career highlight came last year when he scored 101 on debut in a one-day match for the Redbacks.

The lanky right-hander finished the season in the top 25 one-day batting averages in the nation but had his season prematurely ended when he was sidelined with a fractured skull.

Drew, 26, came through the ranks of Alstonville cricket and has been in and around the State scene for a few years since making his first-class debut in 2005.

A career highlight came last year when Drew and the Tigers faced a near full-strength Sri Lankan one-day team.

The right-arm quick took 5-36 that day to put himself on the radar of national selectors.
