Kicking goals for kids and Aussie Rules

ALTHOUGH Josephine Rogers has never played a footy game in her life, that did not stop her from kicking a goal of her own.

She received an Order of Australia Medal from Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey for 40 years of hard work in Mackay's Aussie Rules community.

An overwhelmed Mrs Rogers received her OAM with Bravehearts' founder Hetty Johnston and 19 others at Government House in Brisbane.

"Just being in the presence of Hetty Johnston, I really respect the work she does helping children," she said.

From supporter to secretary, to treasurer, to tribunal member, Mrs Rogers has been a staunch team player on the sidelines.

Earlier this year she also received the Mackay Senior Sports Award.

Mrs Rogers and her husband moved from the Barossa Valley in South Australia - where Aussie Rules is the number one footy code - to Mackay for his work in 1973.

"We were just like everybody else (in SA) and we supported (Aussie Rules)," she said.

The first Mackay team they supported not long after their arrival, East Mackay, went on to win the grand final that year.

The team's name has changed to the Eastern Swans since then, but her loyalty has not wavered.

But Mrs Rogers is quick to explain she remains impartial when it comes to her Aussie Rules' duties. - APN Newsdesk
