Jayant Patel faces long weekend wait for his fate

FORMER Bundaberg surgeon Dr Jayant Patel faces a long wait over the weekend after jury has yet to reach a verdict to determine his fate.

Dr Patel, 63, has pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane District Court to causing grievous bodily harm through medical negligence to former patient Ian Vowles.

The crown claimed Dr Patel unnecessarily removed Mr Vowles' colon and rectum during an operation at Bundaberg Hospital in 2004.

The crown further claimed Dr Patel did not give Mr Vowles any alternatives to the surgery.

The jury will continue deliberating on Monday at 9.30am. (Oct 14)
