Hockey backs Sinodinos's attempt to return to Cabinet
APN NEWSDESKTREASURER Joe Hockey has backed his former Assistant Treasurer Senator Arthur Sinodinos if he chooses to return to the Abbott government Cabinet.
Senator Sinodinos, who only days ago faced a final hearing before a corruption inquiry in New South Wales, had previously resigned from the Cabinet over his role as chairman of Obeid family-linked company Australian Water Holdings.
While the former adviser to then-Prime Minister John Howard was not found to have engaged in any wrongdoing, he last week told the Independent Commission Against Corruption it was not his role to ensure compliance over political donations.
Senator Sinodinos said after the ICAC hearing last week he hoped to return to the frontbench in Canberra following the investigation.
Asked if it was now appropriate for Senator Sinodinos to return to the Cabinet, Mr Hockey on Monday said "of course", and that he "only ever stood down temporarily".
But Mr Hockey said while he would "love to have my Assistant Treasurer back", the ICAC inquiry needed to be resolved, and "everyone's still waiting for the final report". - APN NEWSDESK
