Brothers dominate over Lismore

BETTER early-season fitness and ‘a whole new attitude’ contributed to Marist Brothers’ first win over Lismore rivals Northern United in the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League.

Brothers defeated United 22-14 at Crozier Field in Lismore on Saturday night in the opening round of the NRRRL and of the inter-club Bundjalung Cup.

On its way to making the 2009 grand final in its inaugural year, Northern United easily accounted for its Lismore rivals in both competition rounds.

“I was ecstatic to keep Northern United to three tries,” coach David Krause said yesterday.

“We had a lot of injuries last year and after a good pre-season it’s looking a lot brighter.

“Four of our forwards played the full 80 min-utes, and that makes a big difference.”

Northern United skipped away to a 10-0 lead early but by half-time the Rams were in front 12-10.

It was 20-14 with time running out and a late penalty goal ensured Brothers of the two competition points.

Krause said hooker Jack Woods had an outstanding game.

“Jack trained with Brothers a few years ago but has played rugby for the Gold Rats (SCU) for the past couple of seasons,” he said.

Krause said hooker Willie Hammond and prop Dave Fernando had impressed for Northern United, while Evan Hickling had a willing battle with his former Brothers team-mates.
