Ashton Agar smashes cricket test debut records

ASHTON who?

The biggest surprise on day one of the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge was not that 14 wickets fell, or that Aussie skipper Michael Clarke was out for a duck, it was the debut of 19-year-old spinner Ashton Agar.

The tall, slender left-armer was not even in the Ashes touring party - he had been in England as part of the Australia A squad.

Agar admitted he had a tear in his eye after being presented with his baggy green cap before play by fast bowling great Glenn McGrath.

"It was a dream come true. It's everything I've wanted from a cricketing point of view," Agar, who finished with the figures of 0-24 off seven overs, said.

The teenager's shock inclusion came at the expense of Nathan Lyon who has been the No.1 spinner since taking six wickets on debut against Sri Lanka in 2011.

New coach Darren Lehmann explained Lyon's omission did not spell the end of his career, saying, "he's going to play a part in this Ashes series ... there's no doubt about that."

Australia resumed on day two at 4-75 chasing England's 215. Peter Siddle was the star, taking 5-50.
