Rovers and Byron battle for the big prize

Mens soccer

Rovers striker Aaron Heffernan calmly slotted two goals early in the second half of the preliminary final at Nielson Park to set up a 4-1 win over a spirited Maclean on Sunday.

The win sets up a mouth-watering grand final clash between the Lismore based team and Byron Bay at Oakes Oval at 6.45pm this Saturday, September 30. Last weekend Byron and Rovers played the game of the decade with Byron winning the penalty shoot out 3-1 after the sides were locked 5-all at the end of extra time.

Maclean had their chances in the preliminary final, particularly in the first half, and could have gone to the break two up, but the game was locked at 1-all after Travis Armstrong converted from the spot for Maclean and Rovers Andrew Gray finished well through a crowded box.

Maclean had the better of the first half with Rovers struggling to contain their short passing game.

Im not sure what Rovers young captain/coach Tim Sheridan said to his charges in the locker room, but they came out breathing fire, with Aaron Heffernan scoring twice in seven minutes. Tall, fast and strong on the ball, Heffernan is an ideal recipient for the through ball. Rovers sealed the match when a mis-kicked shot from Andrew Gray deflected of a defender and past the stranded Bobcats keeper.

In first division, next years new premier division teams Burringbar and Bangalow went head-to-head with Burringbar sealing the premiership double 2-1 at Cudgen on Saturday night.

The Bandits will become the first Tweed side to gain entry to the top ranks and will be joined by Bangalow after the Bluedogs finished second in the minor premiership.

The two will replace Casino and Thistles, whose presence in first division next year will ensure it stays a highly competitive competition.
