8 dead: "Snowzilla" blizzard slams into east coast of the US

A DEADLY blizzard with bone-chilling winds and potentially record-breaking snowfall has slammed the eastern US, with officials reporting at least eight people killed in road accidents as snow piled up.

Nearly 60 centimetres of snow has been dumped on the suburbs of Washington DC with more expected through Saturday.

Forecasters said the storm - dubbed "Snowzilla" by some US media - would last into Sunday as it moved menacingly up the coast.

Six people were killed in road accidents in North Carolina, said Nicole Meister, a spokeswoman for the state's emergency management office. One person was also killed in Kentucky and another in Virginia, officials said.

"There's no reason to be out there," Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said.
