660 good reasons to jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane

CHAMPION skydiver Anita Perryman can answer why you should jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane: because you'll probably want to do it again, like she has - 660 times at last count.

Another answer would be if you only ever do it once you may as well do it over the beautiful Whitsunday islands. Who can argue with that logic?

Tandem skydiving is a pursuit where you are connected to a harness attached to a tandem master who will guide you through the whole jump from exit through freefall, piloting the canopy, and landing.

Perryman, 45, had her first jump off Airlie Beach when her partner, Matt Cryer, gave her a gift voucher to jump tandem for her 33rd birthday - a present she now says was very special.

"There's no way I would ever have jumped out of a perfectly good plane; if it was up to me the money would have been spent otherwise," she said.

But, I'm glad it came like that as I would never, ever have considered it on my own," she said.

"I'm of the opinion that we should all experience at least something once in your life. If you love it, you love it, and if you don't you've at least had the experience."

Her partner, Cryer, jumped with her that day and by the time she had landed she was already planning when to do it again."

They both immediately signed for another and within a week applied to enter the individual Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) qualification course to jump solo.

The numbers of fun jumpers experiencing tandem jumps from Airlie Beach is growing as it is an experience nothing short of amazing.

"It's so beautiful. As the plane climbs up and up the islands are pointed out to you by the instructors, but for first-timers, the best moment is yet to come," she said.

"The tandem master will help relax you, but then, when you jump out that door, it is full-on sensory overload," Perryman said.

"I'm fairly sprightly for my age and it's something I'm very passionate about.

"There's no end in sight for me really."

Skydive Airlie Beach is a 2-3 hour activity with free local pickups, operated by a highly qualified professional crew that have amassed thousands of jumps each.
