50,000 teachers to strike over salary deal

PARENTS are being encouraged to find alternative care for students as about 50,000 New South Wales public school teachers stop work tomorrow morning.

The industrial action will be held during school hours and is expected to end by recess, with some schools warning it could last until 10.30am.

In an email to teachers, the NSW Teachers Federation said minimal supervision would still be available for students who arrived at the normal time and regular classes would resume after the industrial action.

Teachers will be asked to vote on a new salary deal from the NSW Government, with the federation trying for months to get the current 2.5% pay rise cap overturned.

The union last week ran a ballot of TAFE teachers with 92% of voters supporting 2.5% salary increases each year for three years with no cuts to working conditions.

The email said teachers would be given up to half an hour for debate and voting.

Parents should contact their children's schools if they have not been advised about the arrangements.
