Erotica readers turn 50 Shades as new book launches

IN THE week since its release, the fourth book in the 50 Shades of Grey franchise has sold more than 1.1 million copies.

Poor reviews haven't stopped readers queuing overnight in major cities to buy Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey, which is told through the eyes of its control-freak billionaire namesake.

At the Lismore Book Warehouse 15 copies were sold quickly on the morning of release but local bookstore staff say the sexy series has been a winner on other fronts.

The Book warehouse's Lea Wilson said EL James' steamy best seller, which explores sadomasochistic sexuality, has attracted the most unlikely readers back to reading.

"A man in his 70s came in one day and bought all three books," she said.

"We have had people pick it up who haven't read books in a long time so there is a very positive aspect to its success."

Since the popularity of the original 50 Shades bestseller there has been a whole lot of authors who have jumped on the erotica bandwagon, said Ms Wilson.

"Some are possibly better writers. It's about taste," she said.

Ms Wilson said she was pleasantly surprised by the numbers of blokes who had purchased the steamy book.

"Generally, I think women are very good at exploring their curiosity with books," she said.

"They don't seem to care what other people think about what they are reading.

"With 50 Shades it was interesting to see readers who didn't quite fit the bill.

"Particularly for a certain generation of people, (the sexually adventurous world of) 50 Shades is not part of their experiences."

The book fed that curiosity, she explained.

Ms Wilson said the fourth book was not launched with the level of marketing suspense and fanfare of the first two.
