4WD show pegged for Lismore until 2017
LISMORE'S four-wheel drive caravan, camping and marine show will remain at Lismore Showground until 2017 after gaining support, and not be moving to Ballina after all.
Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter fundraising manager Zeke Huish said support from Lismore City Council and the North Coast National A&I Society secured the immediate future of the annual fundraising event in Lismore.
"The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter service would like to acknowledge the support being offered by the Lismore City Council to help with the staging of one of the region's largest events," Mr Huish said.
"The Lismore City Council have committed their support as a major sponsor of the 4WD Show as well as assisting with in-kind support to the North Coast National A&I Society Inc to perform drainage improvement works at the Lismore Showground."
"This commitment from Lismore City Council will ensure that large events at the Lismore Showground, like the 4WD Show, will continue to attract visitors to the area."
Ballina Shire Council had offered $20,000 for the show to move to Kingsford Smith Park.
Yesterday councillors voted the money would be split between July's Skullycandy Oz Grom Open surfing competition, and the November Prawn Festival.
Ballina Marine Rescue unit commander John Donoghue was delighted with the news and hopeful the annual Boat and Leisure Show would also continue.
Mr Donoghue said the 2012 show was the organisation's most successful ever, raising more than $30,000.
"We had everything on hold until we had an idea about what was happening because the town can't handle two shows," he said.
