4 police stings targeting drug drivers on Northern Rivers

FOUR times in as many months Northern Rivers police have targeted drug drivers on the region's roads. Here is a breakdown of the biggest busts.

1. Operation Safe Arrival

THE three-day blitz in December last year targeted the Tweed Byron area. OF the 622 drivers drug tested, 104 returned positive readings for cannabis or methylamphetamine.

2. Operation South Tracks

POLICE were shocked by the number of drug fivers caught during this three day operation in Febrruary. Of the 316 drivers tested, five returned positive drug tests.

3. Operation Watchtower

DURING the one-day operation in the Tweed Byron Local Command Area earlier this month, 1659 drug tests were conducted with 133 drivers charged with drug-related offences.

4. Weekend operation

ONE in five people  tested positive for driving with illicit drugs in their system during a random drug testing operation in mid-December.  

Among those who tested positive was a heavily pregnant P-Plater, a man who allegedly kicked a police vehicle, and a 58-year-old man caught twice in as many hours.
