3000 users' power cut
ALMOST 3000 electricity customers in Dunoon and surrounding areas were without power after a fire threatened a substation at Mullumbimby yesterday.
The Terranora interconnector building on Wilson's Creek Rd caught fire about 8.45am, prompting a quick response from emergency services.
Five fire emergency units, including specialist Hazmat and Fire and Rescue NSW units as well as Rural Fire Service vol- unteer units were dispatched to the blaze.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said when the first unit arrived on the scene, the roof of the building was "well alight".
At 9.30am, a foam tanker was also called in.
The Essential Energy substation did not catch fire but power from it had to be turned off to allow fire crews safe access to the interconnector building, North Coast regional general manager Brian McLean said.
"Emergency service personnel did a great job today, as did our own people in making sure the power assets were secured and made safe so everyone could get on with putting the fire out," he said.
"We've got a bit of work to do to make sure everything is in order at the Mullumbimby site but we're confident Essential Energy's infrastructure is in good shape."
Power was restored at 1.20pm and nobody was injured.
