$2.4m to boost local sports fields

SPORTING fields worth $2.4 million have been approved for Wollongbar.

Ballina Shire Council last week gave the green light for the staged development of the fields, which will be constructed off Rifle Range Rd.

The first stage will include an AFL field, two rugby grounds, a cricket oval, six tennis courts and land for a clubhouse, along with lighting, vehicle access from Pearces Creek Rd and almost 200 car spaces.

The second stage will incorporate four netball courts and another car park with 94 spaces.

It is proposed that the facility would be used between 7am and 10pm, seven days.

Cr David Wright lobbied to bring forward the work on Pearces Creek Rd to the first stage because of concerns from nearby residents.

"I just think it is better for everyone in the community," he said.

"This is not just an amenity issue - this is a safety issue.

"I am pretty passionate about this.

"In the end this is going to be a regional ground; it will be fantastic."

But Mayor Phillip Silver said he was concerned about bringing forward the work, which he said would cost more than $700,000.

"I believe that's too much for the broader community to have to pay," he said.

"To spend the money on that means it is not being spent on something else."
