$20 million Ballina service centre development up for sale

THE site of the planned highway service centre at the Teven Rd interchange of the Ballina bypass is now on the market.

The developers, Ballina HSC Pty Ltd, have appointed Ray White Brisbane to sell the site through a national marketing campaign.

It has been a bumpy road for this long-awaited, $20 million development.

Plans for the service centre were first lodged in 2007.

Ballina Shire Council deferred a decision four times until the previous developer withdrew the application.

New plans for the centre went on public exhibition in November 2010 and council approved the development application in June 2011.

The project's town planner, Steve Connelly, said his clients were now "very disappointed" that they had been forced to make the decision to sell the site.

"When Ballina HSC Pty Ltd took on the project, it set itself a strict investment strategy to complete the building work and enter operational phase within five years," he said.

"Substantial time and effort has been required to address the extensive conditions imposed upon the development application.

"That process is still continuing and my clients now need to move on."

Mr Connelly said the principals of Ballina HSC Pty Ltd believe the project is still "a highly desirable development".

It will be sold through Formal Offers to Purchase.

Ray White's retail director, Andrew Schmidt, said he expected to start the campaign early next week.

He said he was proud to have been selected for the job.

"The development is eagerly awaited as there is an essential need for such a facility to meet the strong demand from both road users and investors," he said.

"Geographically, Ballina serves as a strategic highway stoppage point and this site, melding north-south traffic with the east-west Bruxner Hwy corridor, will see it become the premier truck and car service centre on the Pacific Hwy between Sydney and Brisbane."
