Man, 18, held over car vandalism

AN 18-year-old Lismore man has been charged with vandalising motor vehicles at a car lot in Ballina Street, Lismore, over the weekend of October 17 and 18.

The man also faces charges for an incident in November, in which stock in a car yard wasattacked.

The October charges follow a rampage through several lots in the city, including Pollard’s Car Sales, City Toyota, Lismore Nissan and Trevan Ford. The ‘radius of damage’ was 2km, according to a spokesman for the dealers, with an estimated bill of $40,000.

In the November incident City Toyota and another yard suffered vandalism estimated at $36,000.

On November 19 a man was caught on camera smashing windscreens with a shopping trolley and jumping on car bonnets at City Toyota.

Footage was handed to police who had spoken to the alleged offender earlier in the evening, taken his details and given him a ‘move-on’ notice.

When they saw the footage they immediately recognised him and were able to go straight to his home and arrest him.

Police connected the two episodes because they had the same MO (modus operandi).

The man is due to appear in Lismore Local Court on December 21.
