100-year-old computer buff
MARIE Shepherd may be 100, but she may know how to use a computer better than the average Joe.
Mrs Shepherd has been part of a group of seniors from Southern Cross Care St Michaels in Casino undertaking a four week Tech Savvy Seniors computer course thanks to ACE Community Colleges.
The course takes the training to the facility where participants learn basic computer skills which assist them in keeping in touch with their families, keeping their brain engaged and socialising with other participants
At the final class of the course today, Mrs Shepherd declared that for Christmas she'd love her very own laptop, which she now has the skills to use to communicate with her family.
Melissa Dickson, lifestyle coordinator at Southern Cross Care St Michaels, said the classes have been grabbed with open arms by the residents and their families, who have enjoyed the opening of the gates of techno communication with their elderly loved ones online, just like Mrs Shepherd has done.
"Most of them have found it pretty challenging, which is exactly what you want," Ms Dickson said.
"Some have done it for social reasons, some have done it for learning, and some have done it purely to play games on the computer."
