Alleged robber caught while waiting for a taxi

CALLING a cab was the downfall of a man who had been on an alleged two-week crime spree across Queensland.

Hervey Bay police expect to charge the 36-year-old with more than 100 charges after the man allegedly stole a number of cars, evaded police and committed stealing offences in the Fraser Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gympie and Bundaberg areas.

Hervey Bay Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mick Polit said police caught up with the man after he allegedly robbed a Doolong South Rd home yesterday.

"The offender had broken into this house, stolen a large amount of property and was waiting for a taxi to come pick him up when he was located by the police dog squad," he said.

Sgt Polit said the man arrived in the Fraser Coast region on Sunday night and dumped a car on Scrub Hill Rd, which he had allegedly stolen from Bundaberg.

Police will also allege the man stole a car in Hervey Bay yesterday when a woman was unpacking her groceries from her car.

Sgt Polit said that it was not usual for someone to be charged with this many offences at the one time.

"We don't come across this in Hervey Bay a lot," he said.

"It shows the Hervey Bay public that if people commit offences in Hervey Bay that their local police will locate and bring them to justice," he said.
