A POLICE officer has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a woman in Goonellabah last year.

The officer, who has a court-issued non-publication order against his name, was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault with an act of indecency last November.

It's alleged the 29-year-old visited the home of a woman known to him on November 5 and assaulted her.

The Northern Star reported last year that the officer was at a farewell party for a fellow police officer in Ballina before he went to the victim's home in Goonellabah.

The matter was mentioned in Lismore Local Court this morning where the defendant's lawyer, James Fuggle, entered pleas of not guilty to both assault charges on behalf of his client.

The matter was adjourned until April 3.

The defendant did not appear in court this morning.

He was been stripped of his duties and his employment status is currently under review, a NSW Police spokeswoman said.
