PERSISTENT rain on the North Coast has led to a flood watch being issued for the Tweed, Richmond, Wilson and Clarence rivers.

Richmond Tweed Region SES community engagement co-ordinator Janet Pettit said between 20 and 40mm was recorded on average across the Richmond Tweed Area.

"There have been a number of flood rescues - three in Murwillumbah and four in Mullumbimby and the SES reminds residents not to walk, drive or ride in floodwaters."

Nimbin resident Sarah Helliwell recorded 71mm of rain from 7am before noon yesterday at her Crofton Rd property.

"It's basically sodden and has been for the last three days, so any water we get just runs straight off the land," she said.

Nearby resident Mark Everingham said he was aware of residents digging trenches and drains on properties in Gungas Rd.

"I had to cancel appointments in Lismore because the causeway on Gungas Rd was over," he said

The rain has been directed to our region by a slow-moving high pressure system centred over the southern Tasman Sea.

Heavy rain is forecast today, which will ease on Thursday to possible showers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
