Anti-CSG group pickets mining AGM

A LARGE contingent of local anti-coal seam gas activists took their concerns to Brisbane last Thursday during a protest outside a shareholders' meeting for the annual general meeting of mining company LNG Ltd.

Around 80 protesters from the Nimbin Environment Centre, Kyogle Group Against Gas, Casino Group Against Gas, Keerrong Gas Squad and the Northern Rivers Guardians were protesting the company's plans to build an LNG export facility in Gladstone, where an estimated 1.5 million tonnes per annum of gas will be supplied from the Northern Rivers, protest organiser Boudicca Cerese said.

"In the last five weeks the company LNG Ltd has increased its share in gas company Metgasco, which has CSG operations in northeast NSW, from around 5% to over 10%," she said.

"LNG shareholders should be aware that investing in gas supply from the Northern Rivers is a very risky proposition given the massive community opposition and uncertain regulatory environment in NSW."

The protest outside LNG Ltd's AGM in the Sofitel Brisbane Central was successful, Ms Cerese said, with the meeting noting the community backlash against the Gladstone proposal.
