Edna Driver, 81, and Hal Giddins, 87, celebrate their union under the arches at St Jame’s Church in Toowoomba.
YOU are never too old to fall in love — just ask Toowoomba’s newest married couple.
Hal Giddins and Edna Driver tied the knot at Saint James’ Church on Saturday, surrounded by friends and family.
With more than 160 years of life experience between them, the spark remains strong for the loving couple.
Family friend Louise Barger was smiling from ear to ear after the service, delighted that Edna had found her match.
“It’s just so refreshing and really puts your faith back in humanity,” Ms Barger said.
“Edna used to say every pot has its lid.
“Now she’s found her lid.”
Father Gary Harch administered the service and dusted off the old prayer books at the couple’s request.
“In the 60s, they swapped over to new prayer books,” Fr Harch said.
“I’ve been a priest for 25 years and this is the first couple ever to ask me to use the older version for their service.
“It’s nice to do something a bit different.”
Hal and Edna first met back in 1969, when they were both working for the State Wheat Board.
Over the years they remained close friends, and found comfort in each other after Hal’s wife passed away two years ago.
Edna’s great nephew, Ross Petersen, said it was a match made in heaven.
“When Edna called up two months ago and told me the news, it made my year,” he said.
“It made all our years.”
