Family fun for NAIDOC Week

Tags: naidoc week

A SPORTS day, “Goorioke” and a Kids Disco are among the activities planned for NAIDOC Week in Ballina Shire.

NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) is celebrated across Australia in July each year.

The week recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

NAIDOC Week activities in Ballina will begin on Monday, July 4, with the annual Celebration Walk through the Ballina Town Centre, commencing at 10am.

Ballina Shire council said that all shire residents are welcome to join in the walk. Representatives from community groups and service clubs are also encouraged to show their support.

On Tuesday there will be a stalls day at Missingham Park amphitheatre.

Kingsford Smith Park will host the sports day on Wednesday.

A family day will be held at Fawcett Park on Thursday, followed that night by a Kids Disco (fancy dress) at the Richmond Room.

On Friday, everyone will have the chance to be a star with the Goorioke to be held at the Ballina RSL Club.

To obtain details of the Celebration Walk and other activities for NAIDOC Week, telephone council’s Strategic and Community Services Group on 6686 1284 or visit council’s website.

The 2011 National NAIDOC theme is Change: the next step is ours, which is about taking responsibility for the future.
