Beef Week bigger than ever

VISITORS enjoyed a tour of the Casino Folk Museum yesterday as one of the final events on the Casino Beef Week program.

Close to record numbers attended this year’s event, which kicked off on May 21, peaked on the weekend with the Beef Week Street Parade and culminates today with the judging of the carcase competition.

“It was very close to our biggest year, I reckon,” Beef Week president Stuart George said.

“We were overwhelmed by the community support and by the numbers over the whole week.”

Mr George said Saturday, which included the cattle competitions, woodchopping, and the Beef Week rodeo, was a highlight of the event.

“Saturday attracted families and people to the town and it was great to see everyone having a good time,” he said.

Allen Ramsey, of Ramsey and Bulmer livestock agents, said the quality of the yarding for the cattle competitions was as good as he had seen at Beef Week.

“The overall condition the cattle were presented in was excellent,” Mr Ramsey said.

He said top-priced steers earned a premium of up to 80 cents a kilogram on the market. The top dressed-weight price achieved was 465 cents a kilogram.

The winning steers are likely the only ones for who this year’s Beef Week has not ended well, as they were slaughtered yesterday at the Casino meatworks and will today compete in the carcase competitions.

Police did not attend any majorincidents over the course of Beef Week and said the crowd was well behaved. Coal seam gas protesters were allowed to conduct a street walk following the street parade and complied with all police directions.
