Journey of Namatjira takes to stage

Tags: albert namatjira, norpa

HE WAS Australia’s best known Aboriginal painter and one of Australia’s most accomplished artists.

Now the story of Albert Namatjira will be presented on stage by NORPA as one of the highlights of its 2011 program.

“The production will take people on a journey that captures the intense beauty, depth, opportunism, mateship and injustice that has shaped our country,” said director Julian Louis.

Associate producer Andy Stewart said that, as well as the production, which will be for only two nights on September 30 and October 1, locals would have a chance to take part in watercolour workshops by some of Albert Namatjira’s direct descendents and see some of his original work which will be featured in an art show at the City Hall.

“The play also stars the leading Aboriginal actor in Australia today, Trevor Jamieson, so the audience will be treated to some brilliant work,” he said.

In conjunction with the stage show, NORPA, in partnership with Lismore Regional Gallery, will present an exhibition of Hermannsberg water colours (the style attributed to Namatjira).
