Dads to score with gifts

Special day: Father’s Day celebrations are set to kick off tomorrow for Paul Gillan and his sons Fergus (5) and Cameron (5 months) and daughter Isla (3).

PAUL GILLAN is one of seven new fathers at the Lennox Head Rugby Club this season.

Indeed, the club has become so fertile that tactics on the football field have been replaced with fathering advice.

That’s why Father’s Day tomorrow will be so special not only for Mr Gillan and his family of five, but the Lennox Trojans as well, not to mention the thousands of fathers across the Northern Rivers. “There has been a fair bit of talk at the club (about babies),” the 42-year-old said.

Mr Gillan has been joined by other “baby club” members Jeff Wilson, Braidon Boniface, Carlos Dobson, Steve Spinks and Ben Rampling who have had boys in the past six months. Another club member, Scott Wisemantel, became father to a girl.

With two young boys, Cameron (five months) and Fergus (five), as well as a girl Isla (three), Mr Gillan is expecting the usual round of cards from the kids.

“Tomorrow, we’re [the family] not doing anything special as far as I know. We’ve got a few friends coming around for lunch who the kids like to play with,” he said.

“Although I have been told I may get a few surprises. The kids are only little so I usually get a card or something they’ve made with their mum.”

According to website askmen.com, the worst five gifts a father can receive includes personal hygiene products, car accessories, cheap gadgets, novelty ties and socks and anything with ‘World’s Best Dad’ plastered across it.

Conversely, the best gifts include alcohol, fishing gear, top-quality meats, wine (apparently it’s distinct from alcohol) and tickets to sporting events.

“Funnily enough, I’d probably agree with that,” Mr Gillan said.

“Out of the top five, I reckon I’d most probably like top-quality meats. I could then share it on the barbecue.”
