First-round winners: The Woodlawn College, Lismore, cricket team yesterday.
THE first round of the expanded Twenty20 schools cricket competition has proved a hit, with 28 teams from 15 schools playing in Lismore yesterday.
The competitions are the Adam Gilchrist Shield (years 9-10) and the Matthew Phelps Shield (years 7-8).
A highlight yesterday was several girls playing across different teams, something which the organisers have encouraged.
Yesterday, Lismore district winners for the Gilchrist Shield were Woodlawn and Trinity colleges, and the Tweed district winners were Kingscliff High and St Mary’s, Casino.
In the Phelps Shield, the Lismore winners were Richmond River High, Lismore, and Xavier College, Ballina, while the Tweed district winners were Kingscliff High and combination side Trinity Casino.
These teams will play in the semi-finals on September 14 at a venue to be decided.
The tournament is backed by the Northern NSW branch of the Lord’s Taverners.
