SOMETIMES more worldly elements like wind and breaking ropes can lay even the grandest plans asunder.

But art is nothing if not adaptable. And with his 14-metre high inflatable hand firmly grounded behind Lismore's Regional Art Gallery, Melbourne-based artist Carl Scrase reckons passers-by will still get the point.

Inspired by the founder of analytical psychology Carl Jung, The Generative Power of Opposites, which was illuminated on Monday night, is either a large peace sign or a rather rude gesture – depending on your vantage point.

“I was interested in how things can be viewed from two different perspectives and how new thought comes out of that conflict,” Mr Scrase said.

The idea for the sculpture, which was on view for 24 hours, came out of the Arts Lab at last year's Splendour in the Grass music and arts festival.
