JANELLE SAFFIN: “As a mother this has been a very difficult time.”
PAGE MP Janelle Saffin continued her Federal election campaign program yesterday, despite the drama unfolding in her family life.
In a dignified and professional manner, an emotional Ms Saffin asked that her family’s privacy be respected, releasing a short written statement before turning her attention back to Federal issues.
“As a mother this has been a very difficult time,” the statement read.
“My son has been struggling with mental health issues and substance abuse for many years.
“As this matter is now within the justice system I cannot comment further.”
Ms Saffin stayed in Ballina on Wednesday night, the night her son was arrested, awaiting the arrival of Small Business Minister Craig Emerson.
Both were sharp on their feet advocating for Government policy to assist small business and largely kept to their tight schedule.
She and the Minister had breakfast at The Point before walking River Street talking to small business owners and then attending a function at the Ramada Hotel.
They then headed to Lismore for what was to be a business woman’s luncheon at The Left Bank Cafe.
“It started out as a forum for women in business, but once the blokes heard about it they wanted to join in so we’ve got them both here,” Ms Saffin joked.
By then the news of her son had broken and the strain was showing, but the undaunted Member for Page pushed on.
After fielding more questions, Ms Saffin and Mr Emerson left the journalists at the door and headed into a room full of hungry small business people.
After the luncheon the party headed to Casino for another main street walk and talk with retailers and residents.
