'Illegal' logging near Evans Head

THE North East Forest Alliance has called on the Minister for the Environment, Frank Sartor, to act immediately to stop 'illegal' logging in Doubleduke State Forest, inland from Evans Head, and to prosecute Forests NSW for their blatant disregard for threatened species.

During an audit of a current logging operation yesterday, NEFA found that Forests NSW were logging without first identifying and marking the trees and areas required to be protected for threatened species as explicitly required by the Threatened Species Licence.

NEFA spokesperson, Dailan Pugh, said under Forests NSW’s licence logging and roading was prohibited in areas which had not been subject to compartment mark up surveys.

NEFA’s audit report will be released when complete.
