Tornado won't ruin us: Lennox

Sally and Brook Dillon-Thompson from Logan Village didn’t let the recent tornado change their plans to stay at the Lake Ainsworth Caravan Park, choosing to support the town as it recovers.

TORNADOES, like lightning, don't strike in the same place twice.

At least that was the hope of the thousands of holiday-makers, shoppers and surf fans who poured into Lennox Head at the weekend.

Warm sunshine jostled with showers for most of the day, but despite a chilly south-westerly, and the scary events of June 3 when a tornado ripped through the town, Lake Ainsworth Holiday Park was 80 per cent full and the community market doing a healthy trade.

In the water at the precise spot the water spout came ashore, 100 women surfers were working the waves in the All Girls Surf Showdown. Event director Max Perrot was thankful for the ‘clean, smooth surf'.

At the caravan park families made the best of things.

“We've got a great bunch in this weekend,” said Debbie Smith, who manages the park with her husband, Aaron.

“They are ever so jovial. Everyone seems happy.”

Some tourists had even extended their stay, she said.

Alan Hillman and his family, from Brisbane, weren't put off by news of the tornado.

Like many others, they had phoned the park when the power came back on, to be told there were ‘no dramas' preventing their holiday.

Sally Dillon-Thompson's only concern had been that the arrival of her and her husband might get in the way of recovery work.

“But we decided the town could probably do with our support,” the Logan Village resident said.

Carolyn Pritchard, from Eviron, said she thought the tornado was ‘pretty freakish', and unlikely to recur.

Joni Teal, who co-ordinates the Sunday market, sold raffle tickets to raise $2000 to help those residents worst hit by the storm.
