Weather warning issued

A SEVERE weather warning and flash flood watch has been issued for the Northern Rivers, with strong winds and heavy rainfall expected to hit the region from midnight last night .

Residents in the Brunswick Valley, particularly Upper Main Arm, The Pocket and Upper Wilsons Creek, are predicted to be affected first by the potential flooding, with the SES advising residents to monitor weather warnings.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued the warning due to a weather trough which looks to turn into a low pressure system by this afternoon Coffs Harbour BOM duty observer Roger Brown said.

“There could be a lot of rain and strong winds,” he said. “This warning is advice of things that are likely over the next three or four days.

“This is one of these little east coast lows that we get every now and again. It has the potential to be pretty strong.”

Richmond-Tweed SES regional controller Scott Hanckel said landholders should consider moving pumps, livestock and equipment.

Wild seas are also predicted with winds developing to 20-25 knots off the coast by tonight.

The Lismore City Council ann-ounced yesterday the wild weather could also close sporting fields.
