THE Lennox Head Headliners Chorus has burst into the spotlight recently with the appointment of a new director, along with a ‘quiet achiever’ and the group’s immense passion for music.

The musical a capella group celebrated its 11th anniversary this year and welcomed the appointment of its new director, Cathy Gordon, whose slow recovery as a survivor of the Port Arthur massacre has been supported by the chorus group.

Ms Gordon was awarded the Sweet Adelines Certified Director’s Certificate this year in Australian record time and during assessment for the certificate achieved the highest score ever recorded in the country.

“This is all coming from someone who doesn’t read or write very well, so I am so rapt. I couldn’t believe it,” Ms Gordon said.

“It has been great for my recovery to know that parts of the old me are still there and I can be a director.

“These women (chorus group) are an inspirational and wonderful group of women who work very hard. They are improving every week.”

Another singer in the 30-member chorus group, Lynn MacDonald, has been recognised as the Headliners’ quiet achiever and will go on to represent the group at a Regional Convention in Western Australia next month.

Between all the individual achievements, the group is working towards making an impression at next year’s National Sweet Adelines Convention.

“We would really like to get a medal and get a better score next year, as eve-ry year we have gone our results have got better,” publicity officer Rita Cranston said.

“But we are also doing a lot of things in the community, like a Broadway show in Bangalow and the Biala Debutante Ball in May.”
