POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal head-on crash at Kempsey yesterday afternoon.
About 1.25pm, a motorcycle was travelling north on the Pacific Highway, about 1km north of Kempsey, when it crashed head-on with a southbound semi-trailer.
As a result of the crash the motorcycle rider fell from his motorbike onto the road and died at the scene.
The sugar-laden truck, which was being driven by a 57-year-old Lismore man, left the road coming to a stop in a paddock. The driver escaped the crash uninjured.
Police, NSW Ambulance Paramedics, NSW Fire Brigades and local State Emergency Service volunteers attended the scene and the road was closed for several hours while police conducted examinations of the crash site.
The male motorcycle rider is still to be formally identified.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
