Hornets win Corey's Cup

A DEPLETED Goonellabah maintained its unbeaten record in the fourth annual Corey New Cup soccer clash with a 2-1 win over Lismore Workers at Weston Park, Goonellabah, on Saturday.

With numerous regulars unavailable, the Hornets could field only two players from their grand final side last year but with a little help from former Socceroo Craig Foster they managed to continue their unbeaten run.

A good crowd of more than 300 watched the charity match.

Foster calmly slotted the opening goal for the Hornets from the penalty spot.

He played within himself but was still impressive, with accurate ball distribution and occasional bursts forward that served as a reminder of his illustrious international career.

The Redmen equalised with a well-taken free kick from Cameron Hyde, before a second dot shot for Goonellabah late in the game enabled Kale Hopper to seal the win for the Hornets.

But the result was secondary to the spirit between the two clubs as they paid their respects to the memory of Corey New with a minute’s silence before the game then produced an entertaining contest.

In the past all money raised has gone to the Southern Cross LADS driving skills organisation, but this year the New family donated the money back to the juniors of the two clubs.
