Indigenous art dealer Barbara Newland, of Byron Bay’s Bim Bam Gallery, with some of the works she will be selling from her garage this weekend.

WORKS by some of Australia’s finest Indigenous artists will be sold for a fraction of their value in a unique garage sale this weekend.

Barbara Newland, of Byron Bay’s Bim Bam Gallery, is holding the one-off sale from her garage in order to clear out space at her gallery to make way for new stock and also for a huge exhibition by Tiwi Island artists in December.

Paintings on offer will include highly-regarded contemporary works by Northern Territory artists including Gloria Petyarre, Kudditji Kngwarreye and Mitjili Napurrula. Also on offer are works from popular Evans Head artist Steve Wilson and Nakkare Turnbull from the Tweed. All works will be half price.

Ms Newland, who has spent many years working in remote indigenous communities, said she literally had no room left in her gallery and saw the garage sale as the best way to get a return for the artists she represents.

“Unlike most galleries, I buy all of my art – I don’t have it on commission, because I want the artist to be rewarded immediately,” she said.

“This is especially important in remote communities where sometimes the only source of economic independence is art. Sell the art, reward the artist and help the community,” she said.

Bim Bam is a well respected gallery and many of the artists Ms Newland represents are in Australia’s major galleries, including GOMA in Brisbane.

The sale will be held this Saturday and Sunday at 7/8 Browning Street, Byron Bay.
