AN ELEVENTH hour bid for a Federal Court injunction to halt the Repco Rally could see the woman behind the legal action kicked off her position as a councillor.
Tweed Shire residents could be headed for a costly 'bankruptcy by-election' if Greens Party councillor and anti-rally campaigner Katie Milne cannot pay her mounting legal bills.
Checks by senior Tweed Shire Council officers on the fine print of the NSW Local Government Act of 1993 yesterday confirmed Cr Milne could be thrown out as councillor if her continuing legal battle bankrupts her, despite earlier advice to the contrary.
Cr Milne, however, remains determined to push ahead and has voiced disappointment that she has been unable to achieve much as a councillor in any case.
She has previously warned she is prepared to go bankrupt in her bid to stop the rally.
Today Cr Milne plans to apply for an injunction in the NSW Land and Environment Court to stop Repco Rally Australia holding its world championship car rally in the Kyogle and Tweed shires this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
On Wednesday she must front the Federal Court of Australia for a costs hearing after failing last Thursday in that court to get an injunction.
Rally Australia organisers have vowed to chase her for their legal costs in that case which they estimate 'in the vicinity of $26,000'.
Cr Milne said she does not have that amount of money 'at this stage'.
More than 50 protesters assembled near the Repco Rally Australia pit-lane area at Cudgen Leagues Club on Saturday morning to protest against the holding of the international championship car rally.
They said the protest was the start of peaceful demonstrations against the event which was 'forced on the region' by special legislation overriding existing laws.

This event was indeed forced on the people of Tweed and Kyogle by way of Special Legislation, courtesy of Sir Lunchalot (Minister Macdonald) and the Rees govt. This is a vile corruption of the democratic process, and I object in the strongest possible terms. And how local business owners can put up their hands as sponsors is beyond me.

If people don't like the why the state govt. has handled this, then the democratic solution is to not vote for this govt. at the next election. Local support for this event probably stems from the recognition that we are an area with very high unemployment, an absence of international events and we are people with a tolerance for diversity (ie. I may not like car racing, but I accept that a lot of people do).
Protesting the event is something that makes the protesters feel good about themselves, but it appears misplaced. I am not going to the rally, but am also not voting Greens at the next election. I think the rally organisers have met any major environmental concerns with the event, and I hope it goes off without a hitch and everyone enjoys themselves.
This is the first time since I can remember that I won't be voting Greens, but I think there needs to be some more flexibility in their attitude to business and the interests of all people.

If Katie Milne loses her job because of her heroic stand against a bunch of bullies she will go down in history as having done more for the people of Tweed & Kyogle than she realises. It's a pity that some other councillors don't stop their cosy fence-sitting and support her.

This event has been keenly anticipated by rally enthusiasts all over the country and the world. For a few hours of noise each day for one long weekend, the whole world will see what a wonderful place the north of NSW is and they'll be reading and watching it online for years to come.
