SOFTLY, softly is how Lee Scartlett, of Wadeville, would like us all to tread on the planet.

It is also the name of a wildlife photography competition Mr Scarlett is running in conjunction with the environmental protection group, 7th Generation.

The competition, which will be held on September 5 and 6, will be a chance for groups, families and individuals to get out into the bush and photograph as many wildlife species as possible.

Mr Scarlett said the competition was being held to raise awareness about the local environment.

“This is the most biodiverse area in Australia. There are 48 species of mammals here,” Mr Scarlett said.

The Border Ranges National Park is the single largest area of rainforest in NSW.

It is also home to endangered species such as the spotted tail quoll and Fleay's barred frog.

Competitors must photograph as many species of wildlife as they can within a designated area and time.

Mr Scarlett said while the competition was being held on the same weekend as the Repco Rally, it was not part of the events being held in conjunction with it.

The competition would be celebrating National Threatened Species Day, he said.

Mr Scarlett said it was important to continue to pursue the region's green image in the face of the rally.

Entry costs $10 and photos must be taken with a digital camera.
