THE Cape Byron Lighthouse will be just one of more than 380 locations from more than 46 countries to host the 2009 International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend on August 15 and 16.

Cape Byron Trust chairwoman Yvonne Stewart said this was a worldwide annual event in which amateur radio operators set up and operated from lighthouses and lightships around the world.

“The Summerland Amateur Radio Club will be operating at Cape Byron Lighthouse with the common objective of making radio contact with as many people as possible over the period,” Ms Stewart said.

“The event will serve to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships, and the need for their preservation and restoration, and to promote amateur radio and foster international goodwill.

“This is an important event working with the community and linking the historic Cape Byron Lighthouse with other lighthouses and lightships from all over the globe.”

For people who would like to learn more about the workings and history of the Cape Byron Lighthouse public guided tours of the lighthouse tower will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Bookings can be made by phoning the Cape Byron Lighthouse gift shop on 6685 5955.
