Artists sketch the saucy side of life

IT’S A new life drawing class with cheek.

Every third Tuesday of the month at Byron Bay’s Buddha Bar, burlesque performers with names like BB le Buff take offalmost all their clothes and model for anyone with a sketch pad.

There are performances, music and plenty of prizes for the ‘artists’.

It’s Byron Bay’s own version of Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, a phenomenon that began in New York and has since spread all over the world.

Co-founder of the Buddha Bar night, Evan Kosack, said Dr Sketchy’s was about escapism and fun.
“You can come and do something a bit arty, a bit saucy and a bit Bohemian. It’s also a greatexcuse to socialise and to get into figure sketching,” he said.

Mr Kosack said Dr Sketchy’s was founded by artist and burlesque performer Molly Crabapple, who was working as an artist’s model and found the classes she posed for sterile and dull. She started the classes on the basis of fair pay for models and decadent fun for all.

Everyone is welcome – established artists or aspiring, or those just looking for an entertaining night out. “You can bring your crayons and sketchpads, or buy them there, and a free drink is included in the $15 entry fee,” Mr Kosack said.

The next session will be held on Tuesday, July 21, from 6.30pm to 9pm.
