BadA QUIRKY tribute to Michael Jackson is part of the Lismore Regional Gallery's new Ecologies exhibition.
Sydney artist Mickie Quick was visiting Lismore and was approached by the gallery to create an artwork in memory of the King of Pop.
His artwork, in the front window of the gallery, is essentially a shrine.
A life-sized Jackson cutout is composed of greenery, and live plants donated by Lismore residents surround the figure.
Mr Quick explained that his installation is called Bring Michael Jackson Back to Life.
“When Michael died it hit me that he had a completely unsustainable way of living. His natural system was to varying degrees less and less natural and this is to counter that. He's made of a life form that is natural and growing and healthy. His surroundings were pretty toxic, so we're reversing that,” Mr Quick said.
For the next month, people are invited to bring in cuttings and live plants to add to the Jackson shrine, which will be an ever-changing tribute.
Mr Quick has a big interest in sustainability and when asked to do this artwork things just came together, he said.
“I was thinking about sustainability and a light bulb went on,” he said.
“Plus I was given this little window box which looks like a sort of shrine, so all the ingredients were synthesised into this installation.”
Mr Quick said the shrine was an extension of his ordinary witnessing of Jackson's life.
