HOOKED ON FISHING: Cabarita Greenback Tailor Fishing Competition committee members Nev Collie, left, and Bevan Wise, the proprietor of Cabarita Bait and Tackle, with the shield.
CLOSE to 1000 anglers are expected to take part in the 25th annual Cabarita Greenback Tailor Fishing Competition this weekend.
Greenback is the colloquial name for a big tailor and $1500 cash plus $500 in prizes is on offer for the heaviest tailor weighed in, and $1000 plus $500 in prizes for the runner-up.
This competition, however, is not just about tailor, with other recreational species offering attractive prizes including flathead, whiting, bream, swallowtail and mulloway.
With $25,000 in cash and prizes there is something on offer for all entrants - if you don't catch a prize-winning fish there are plenty of chances to take home valuable prizes from the many lucky draw prizes on offer.
The major lucky draw prize for all who enter the competition is a 3.4-metre aluminium boat, 5hp four-stroke Honda motor, fittings and trailer valued at $6000.
The competition will be contested in four divisions - senior male, senior female, veteran and junior (under 16).
Entry fees are $25 for seniors and veterans and $15 for juniors.
Sign-on (noon to 6pm today) and weigh-in (9am tomorrow) will be in Pandanus Parade, Cabarita Beach, next to the surf club.
Fishing and beach 4WD licences are available at the sign-on and a fish auction will be held after the weigh-in.
Family entertainment will be provided tomorrow, with live music from 3pm to 6pm.
Cabarita/Pottsville Lions Club is organising the competition and all proceeds will be shared between Cabarita Beach Surf Life Saving Club and Tweed Coast Rescue Squad.
Inquiries to Bevan Wise at Cabarita Bait and Tackle on 66763111.
