WHEN it comes to change I can empathise with the stick-in-the-muds.
Why introduce some new element to our daily routines when they are going good enough as is?
Change for the sake of change has a terrible record, and in many instances the locations where change was introduced were altered for ever.
Take the Repco Rally for instance.
Who knows
how well our district will fare from the upcoming world rally tour? And why introduce such a vigorous activity to a region that is comfortable with its laid-back lifestyle?
But you never know until you try, as the old saying goes.
Obviously the business community in Kyogle is keen to see the event go ahead.
It’s funny that the conservative people protesting against this event are regarded by those who want the rally as anything but!
However, one event should not change the idyllic direction of those areas of Kyogle Shire where the race will run.
The recently released environmental impact report says race organisers can manage the event in an ecologically sensitive manner. Believe that report or not, there is only one way to find out: Suck it and see.
Rally rounds by their very nature are only short in duration. The race is over quick-smart in a few days.
The noise dissipates, the dust settles. Hopefully there will be no dead koalas.
Only then can we truly appreciate the pros and cons of this event.
But failure to give something of this calibre a go is to remain ignorant of what good it might bring to the people of Kyogle.
