IF YOU have ever been moved by a piece of music, you've experienced the power of sound.

According to sound healer Chicchan, sound and music have strong restorative and therapeutic properties that can be used to heal a variety of illnesses.

“An opera singer can shatter glass with her voice. If you can shatter glass you can break up stagnant energy in the body,” the locally-based healer said.

Using tone chimes and crystal bowls, Chicchan creates pure harmonic sounds that can help people to relax and to self-heal.

“When we are surrounded by pure sounds like nature, we bring ourselves back into balance,” she said.

“We can also bring ourself into this state of harmony by using pure harmonic tones.

“We resonate with particular sounds that harmonise with our bodies.”

Chicchan said that the human body was an excellent vessel for sound to travel through because of its high water content.

She said different parts of the body responded to different frequencies, and she demonstrates this in her workshops.

“I'm teaching people how to feel the sound and then how to experience the shift in energies and the opening of the chakras,” she said.

Chicchan likens the experience to a 'sound bath', in which people bathe in pure harmonic sounds to help relax their body.

The health benefits can be profound, according to Chicchan.

“There is documented evidence of healing cancer cells by bringing the body back into balance,” she said.

Sound therapy can also help prevent illness and disease, by teaching people to open up and relax.

Chicchan has been working with sound healing for the past 10 years and said it was a technique that harks all the way back to the ancient civilisations of Greece and Egypt.
