BALLINA Shire Council is going ahead with fluoridation of the shire's water supply.
Last night, at an extraordinary meeting, the council rejected a bid to overturn a decision two weeks ago to fluoridate the water.
The rescission motion had called on the council to create a community panel of seven to fully examine the available evidence on fluoride.
Six councillors, Mayor Phillip Silver, Sharon Cadwallader, Peter Moore, Ben Smith, Susan Meehan and Robyn Hordern, voted against the rescission motion; with Councillors Jeff Johnson, Keith Johnson, David Wright and Alan Brown backing the bid for increased consultation.
Cr Silver said he believed fluoridation was safe and effective and for him to vote otherwise would be immoral.
At the end of the meeting, angry community members lashed the council with cries of 'Zieg heil' from the gallery.

Congratulations to the Ballina Councillors who stood up to the bullying, hysterical tactics of the anti-flouridation lobby.
The decision is decades overdue and show that at last the Council is paying proper attention to the medical and scientific evidence. We should not allow zealots (another example is the anti-vaccination lobby), who are often influenced by absurd conspiracy theories, to dictate policy to our community.
Retreating from science and reason will stop us from dealing effectively with the many important problems that we face.

I am in full agreement with australiana's comments and fully support the majority of Ballina Councilors.
The facts speak for themselves and they are that this part of NSW has appalling levels of dental decay compared to the rest of the state that has treated water.

bullying.......hysterical........zealots.......absurd.......conspiracy.......
If you are correct in your views, can you please enlighten us why fluoridation has nearly been outlawed or discontinued throughout Europe, and why - at the last count - only 6 countries in the world were supplying fluoridated water to more than 50% of their populations?

There is no clear association between fluoridation and cancer or deaths due to cancer, both for cancer in general and also specifically for bone cancer and osteosarcoma. Overall, other adverse effects lack sufficient evidence to reach a confident conclusion.
It is important to have all the facts and not just ones to suit your allegations.
