Aidan receives top Cub's award

Aidan Downs, of Goonellabah, has reached a pinnacle in his career as a scout with the 1st Goonellabah Cub Scouts.

During a special ceremony recently, Aidan was awarded the Grey Wolf Award which is the top award for cubs.

Goonellabah Cub Scouts president Geoffrey Downs said it was rare for a cub to reach this high level of achievement.

“It usually takes a cub the full three years of their membership to achieve enough to be issued the award,” he said.

“The Grey Wolf award is the cub's equivalent to the Promise Challenge Badge for Joey Scouts, The Australian Scout Medallion for Scouts, the well-known Queen Scout Award for Venturers and the Baden Powell Scout Award for Rovers.

“Since the introduction of the award this is the first time that a cub from the Goonellabah pack has achieved it.

“To get it Aiden had to earn numerous badges, plan and lead a hike for his pack, attend camps and produce resources which will remain as teaching aids for his pack.”

First Goonellabah Cub Scouts now have a new joey group for six to seven-and-a-half -year-olds as well as established groups for cubs from seven-year-old to 11-year-old and Scouts from 11-year-old to 15-year-old.
