LIORA CLAFF is amused that a story about her re-establishing her Reiki practice is appearing in the business pages.

Reiki does not have a tradition of advertising, but Ms Claff's story is one that reflects that of many alternative health practitioners in our region.

Before moving to a property near Kyogle 11 years ago, she had a lucrative business in Sydney's Glebe, both treating clients with Reiki and running workshops to attune others.

Ms Claff describes Reiki as a form of universal energy like electricity or radio waves.

“It's everywhere. And I'm the technician, I tune the people in and they can tap in and somehow transform it into healing energy. The body wants to heal, it just needs some energetic help.”

Setting up again in the country proved interesting.

“An opening came up in the main street of Kyogle, next to the butcher - in fact, he was my landlord. So I opened up my practice there and I'd be sitting giving Reiki very calmly and all you could hear was the meat saw going whrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! I loved the humour of the serenity of the Reiki and the butchering nearby.”

Ms Claff, who's practised Reiki for 25 years, was initiated as a Reiki Master of the Usui System by a Swedish woman called Wanja Twan.

She was introduced to Reiki by Ms Twan in an Indian ashram when she was suffering excruciating menstrual cramps. After two treatments the cramps gradually disappeared. Later when she was attuned, Ms Claff used Reiki on herself to cure her migraines.

Ms Claff described the benefits of Reiki.

“People become much calmer and more connnected to who they really are and the parts that are not them start falling away. Reiki works on an emotional level. It's very natural and works where the healing is needed.”

After a seven-year break from Reiki to pursue other things, Ms Claff is marking the re-start of her business and practice at the Starlight Festival at Bangalow from January 8 to 11. She'll be offering a free treatment to visitors.

Ms Claff will be working from home at Lismore Heights and is offering interested people a free half-hour Reiki treatment so they can experience this healing modality for themselves. She will also be holding workshops.
