HEATHER FLETCHER knows that when the heavens open, she had better get to work.
Mrs Fletcher and her husband, Peter, have operated Rural Buying Service in Lismore for 20 years and by lunchtime yesterday had virtually sold out of raincoats as the grey clouds set in.
The old faithful Wellington boots were also doing a strong trade.
“We always have busy days on wet days because that’s when people find out they have holes in their boots,” she said.
The outlook for the rest of the week also means Mrs Fletcher is unlikely to get much rest.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, rain is expected for the rest of the week, thanks to the same weather system that wreaked havoc in South-Eastern Que-ensland yesterday and left one man dead.
Still, it could be worse. However, rainfall in the region is still below the monthly average, a bureau spokesman said.
Despite the rain, few road accidents have been reported, with local police congratulating drivers for reducing their speed in potentially dangerous conditions.
